TW80sG 3: Tron

Tron 2.0This Week’s 80s Game began life as a Steven Lisberger / Walt Disney science fiction film of the same name, released in 1982.

In a nutshell, Tron – the film – is a story about a computer programmer called Flynn, who gets sucked into a computer mainframe (as you do) before being forced to battle with enemy programs inside some of the games he’s created. He is aided during his quest to escape the digital world by a computer security program called Tron.

Alongside the film release, Tron – the game – hit the arcades. Initially earning more than the film itself, this arcade favourite was based around four of the games featured in the movie.

While playing the arcade game you would take on the role of Tron – the computer security program – during a number of battle games on The Grid, the most famous of which is Light Cycles.

A simple but addictive game, Light Cycles involves riding a cycle around The Grid, leaving a solid wall of light behind you. Your enemy will be doing the same and to win you must force your opponent into your light wall, their own light wall, or the outer walls of The Grid.
